let's be honest...

...a short-term service project isn’t really going to change anyone’s life but my own. And that’s the point. A shake-up, a wake-up, a way to make up for all the ways I don’t help the world every week.

As a kid growing up in Kenya, I was impressed when young adults visited for summer mission trips. But when they left, the work remained. The visitors worked hard and put their hearts into it, but their hearts were the only things that truly changed. Changed hearts can go back to their corner of the world and make everyday choices that make a difference, and that is really all I can hope for with this trip. I hope to play a miniscule role in bringing a better way of life to local people, yes, but mostly I am an observer of the people doing the real work.

My goal: to learn more about practical ways to bring clean water to those in the world who don’t have it. And to tenderize my heart toward the need so that I can, in turn, teach my children about our responsibility in this world.

My flight takes off at 5:40 tomorrow morning, and I’m ready.
